How to choose a local insurance agent
Picking an insurance agent is one of those decisions people rush through and then live with for years. Most shoppers compare a price or two and pick whichever quote is cheapest that week. That works out fine until you actually need to file a claim, and suddenly the agent you barely talked to matters a lot more than the twelve dollars a month you saved.
Here's what actually matters when you're choosing a local agent.
Know what you need before you start calling
Auto, home, renters, business, life, health. Some agents specialize, some handle everything. Before you compare anyone, get clear on what you're shopping for and whether you might want to bundle policies later. An agent who only sells one type of coverage isn't a bad agent, but they might not be the right fit if you're trying to consolidate several policies with one person.
Ask who they actually represent
Some agents work for a single insurance company and only sell that company's policies. Others represent several carriers and can shop your situation across all of them. Neither approach is automatically better, but you should know which one you're talking to and why it matters for your situation. (We cover this in more detail in our guide to independent versus captive agents.)
Check how long they've been in your area
An agent who has handled claims in your city for years knows things a call center three states away doesn't: which contractors do good work after a storm, how the local claims process actually moves, what's typical for homes or vehicles like yours. Longevity in your specific market is worth something.
Ask about claims support before you need it
This is the question most people skip and regret skipping. Ask directly: if I have to file a claim, who do I call, and what happens next? A good agent has a real answer. A vague one is a warning sign.
Get more than one quote
Even if you already like an agent, get a second comparison. Rates and coverage details vary more than most people expect for what looks like the same policy on paper, and a quick comparison usually pays for the ten minutes it takes.
Pay attention to how they communicate
Do they explain things in plain language or bury you in jargon? Do they return calls quickly? You're going to need to talk to this person again, probably at a stressful moment. How they communicate now is a preview of how they'll communicate later.
Ask about discounts and bundling
Multi-policy discounts, safe driver programs, home security credits. A good agent brings these up without being asked. If you have to dig for every discount yourself, that's worth noting.
Trust your read of the person
After the coverage checks out and the price is competitive, the last filter is simple: do you trust this person to have your back when something goes wrong? That instinct is usually right.
